This digital exhibition uses the case study of Amherst College to identify and analyze the consequences of ongoing settler colonialism in an academic and cultural context. Using the polemical figure of the mascot as an entry point into this subject, this website details the history of the Lord Jeff character while interrogating the broader belief systems that conceptualize Jeffery Amherst and Native American communities in specific ways. The project also contemplates the complementary role the college plays in constructing stereotypical and objectifying images of indigenous peoples.
